Op de Q&A-site Quora is er een zeer interessante discussie aan de gang waarom sites die gepersonaliseerd nieuws aanbieden niet doorbreken.
Er is onder meer een zeer interessante bijdrage van een product manager van Yahoo:
Yahoo ended up going down that route, and the reason why Frontpage and News verticals are still exceptional successes today is largely due to an algorithmic personalization platform that few are aware of. Some articles have been written about it (called COKE, the Content Optimization Knowledge Engine). Essentially it ranks news & content in the following order:
Most popular (w/ consideration of time-of-day, CTR acceleration, already-viewed stories, etc)
“Light-personalization” (by age, gender, high-level interest)
Deep interest personalization (w/ related content, stories read by similar users, etc
A startup in this space needs an incredibly high critical mass of users, but also powerful (and subtle) personalization to succeed. None have it yet.
